Humpbacks Jul–Oct
World's first Dark Sky Nation
The whole villa to your group

Niue is one of the last truly wild ocean destinations on earth. Water clarity up to 80 m. Deep drop-offs metres from shore. Humpbacks on their annual migration. Spinner dolphins on the coastline. Sunsets that fall directly into the Pacific from our cliff-top base.

This isn't a tour. It's an immersion — for six people who'd rather have one extraordinary week than three good ones. With three instructors on the water, that's roughly one coach for every two divers.

Swimming with a humpback whale in Niue

Why Niue

  • Not crowded. Not commercial. Not overdeveloped.
  • Water clarity up to 80 m
  • Humpback whales pass through from July to October
  • Spinner dolphins along the coastline year-round
  • Deep walls and reef structure close to shore
  • A population of 1,600 people on the whole island

Where you'll stay

Home for the week is our own private freedive villa on the clifftops of Namukulu — you've got the whole house to your group: a shared kitchen and living space, ocean-facing decks, and gardens with the Pacific through every window. It's freedive-family style: communal, unpretentious and social. Facilities are simple and shared (think well-loved dive house, not five-star). What you trade in resort polish, you get back many times over in price and connection.

The rooms

🌊 The Ocean-View Double — now Booked

This is the one. A private room with a double bed, its own deck, and absolutely nothing between you and the Pacific. Wake up to the ocean. Coffee on your deck while humpbacks blow offshore. An unfiltered sunset every single evening — no buildings, no crowds, just the sea swallowing the sun. Wrapped in quiet, private gardens on our cliff-top lodge.

The best view in the house — and somehow not our most expensive room.

  • For a couple — $5,400 pp ($10,800 for two). We'll have something cold waiting on your deck the first night.
  • All to yourself — $6,200. The whole room, the whole deck, the whole horizon. For the solo traveller who wants paradise and privacy.

The Bunk Room — 2 spots left

Backpacker soul, million-dollar view. Two sets of bunks looking out over the gardens to the ocean — the fun room, the sociable heart of the lodge, where every expedition's friendships get made. You'll be bunking with your crew, $4,800 pp.

👑 The Queen Room — now booked

Gone for this departure. Grab one of the final rooms above, or email us to go on the waitlist for 2027.

Your week, your rhythm

The days are full — whales, depth, dolphins, breathwork, hidden swimming holes — but nothing is compulsory. Tap into everything, or tap out for a hammock afternoon and a slow wander to the village. Skip a session to read on your deck. Rejoin at dinner. This is an expedition, not a bootcamp — the ocean sets the schedule, and you set your pace.

(Exact daily schedule weather-dependent — the ocean leads.)

Your journey — from deposit to your tailored week

  • Secure your spot — a $500 deposit holds your room for 28 Aug – 4 Sep 2026 (balance due 10 weeks out).
  • A one-on-one Zoom — once you're in, we jump on a call to get to know you and shape the week around your goals.
  • Make it yours — add an SSI freediving course, scuba, or design a fully tailored package. This is your trip.

Who's leading it

Sacha Williamson — SSI Freediving Instructor Trainer, 25+ years of professional ocean work across 45 countries, including UN and AusAID Pacific infrastructure projects. Pacific waters are where Sacha learned to dive.

This expedition runs with three instructors on the water for a maximum of six guests — roughly one coach for every two divers. That's about as much in-water attention, safety cover and coaching as freediving gets.

Frequently asked

Will we definitely see whales?
We can't promise the ocean. We can promise we're there in peak migration window with licensed operators and the best chance you'll get. Most weeks see multiple encounters.

What if I don't want to swim with whales?
The whale swims are optional — you can stay on the boat or skip the day. No reduction in price (the costs are baked in regardless).

I'm a scuba diver, not a freediver — is this for me?
Yes. There's a scuba option built in and the freediving sessions will teach you skills that improve every scuba diver. Many divers do both.

Solo traveller — what's the room situation?
Two great options. The Bunk Room (shared, mixed) at $4,800 — the sociable heart of the lodge. Or, if you want paradise and privacy, take the Ocean-View Double all to yourself at $6,200 — the best room in the house, sole occupancy. (The twin-share queen is now booked.)

What's the food like?
Daily breakfast and 3 dinners are included — including our traditional Niuean feast night. Beyond that, lunches and the remaining dinners are your own: Niue has 6–7 great local spots — a coffee shop, fish and chips, a Thai place, and incredibly good island food — roughly NZD $30–60/day. Evenings are yours: join the group or take a quiet night for yourself.

Safety & accreditation

All Niue water activities run with licensed Niuean operators. Freedive Aotearoa is AdventureMark certified, Qualmark accredited, and operates under a WorkSafe-aligned Safety Management System. Read our safety standards → | About SSI →

Spots are limited — one ocean-view double and two bunk beds remain. Choose your room type below, or email Sacha with any questions before you book.

Niue Ocean Escape — FAQs

When does the Niue Ocean Escape expedition run?
You fly out of Auckland on Saturday 29 August 2026 and — crossing the International Date Line — land in Niue on Friday 28 August. Your week on the island runs 28 August to 4 September; you depart Niue on 4 September and arrive home on 5 September. We're based at Kaliki Lodge in Namukulu Village, Niue.
What's included in the Niue expedition?
Accommodation, licensed humpback whale swims, freediving sessions, dolphin swims, daily continental breakfast and 3 included dinners (including a traditional Niuean feast night). International flights, travel insurance, and remaining lunches/dinners are not included.
Do I need to be an experienced freediver to join?
No — you don't need a freediving certification. The prerequisite is simply being a confident swimmer. All in-water sessions are coached, and the whale swims run with licensed Niuean operators.
How many people go on each trip?
A genuinely small group — six guests maximum, with three instructors on the trip (around one coach for every two divers). For the 2026 departure we're down to our final rooms — one ocean-view double (couple or sole occupancy) and two bunk spots.
Do I need a visa to travel to Niue?
Visa requirements depend on your passport nationality — get in touch and we can help guide you through what's needed for your specific passport.
