Breath, skills & rescue
Breathwork to slow the body down, confined-water skills, and how to rescue your buddy if something goes wrong.
Into the moana
Shore safety and entry, ocean freediving to 10–15 metres, and safe kaimoana gathering with hunting specialists.
Catch, cook & kai
Prepare and cook what we gather, sit down to a feed together, and yarn about safe practice for the season ahead.

Good questions
Do I need any experience?
No. We start with breathing and skills in calm water, then build up. If you already dive or hunt, you’ll sharpen your technique and your safety.
Can I bring my kids and my partner?
Yes, bring the whānau. The number one rule is we never dive alone, so come with your dive buddy. Let us know ages when you book so we can plan the day around everyone.
How much does it cost?
Pay what you can (koha) when you book before midnight Sunday 11 October. From Monday 12 October the workshop is $50. It’s heavily subsidised thanks to Water Safety New Zealand.
How do I get on a Spearfishing Charter Day?
Complete a Freedive Workshop first, then apply. Places are limited to 4–5 people per day so everyone gets real time with the specialists. The day is $150.
What if the weather’s bad?
Safety comes first. The pool and skills part goes ahead, and the ocean part moves to the backup day if conditions aren’t safe. We’ll keep you posted.
Who’s teaching?
Sacha Williamson, New Zealand’s first female freediving Instructor Trainer with 25+ years in the water, alongside our crew of instructors and spearfishing, hunting and gathering specialists.
What happens after the workshop?
You can apply for a Spearfishing Charter Day, join a club near you, and if it lights you up, train as a kaiako to lead your own community.
