Try Freediving — School Pool Day
Description
One pool day. A whole new relationship with the water.
Try Freediving is our most popular first step into the water: a full day at your local pool where ākonga discover what their breath and body can really do. No experience needed — just curiosity and togs.
Who it's for
Year 5 and up, minimum 25 ākonga (one full class). Perfect for classes and year groups who've done some water time and are ready for something deeper — literally.
What ākonga learn
- Breath-hold basics — safe, supervised static and dynamic technique
- Water confidence — relaxation, finning and moving comfortably underwater
- Safety culture — the buddy system, never diving alone, watching your mate
- Self-regulation — using the breath to manage nerves and find calm focus
The day shape
We run sessions through the day in instructor-led groups, rotating classes through the pool. Each session opens with a dry-land brief and breathwork, moves into guided water work, and closes with a kōrero on what ākonga noticed in themselves. We deliver in school and community pools across Te Tai Tokerau — Kerikeri, Kawakawa, Kaitaia, Whangārei and beyond. Teachers consistently tell us the quietest kids surprise everyone.
Price
$48 per ākonga + GST — minimum 25 ākonga ($1,200 + GST per class). Covers planning and H&S paperwork, trained support to safety ratios, all gear and its full sterilisation, and travel. Invoiced to the school — registering interest costs nothing and holds your term dates.
Safety & ratios
Pool sessions run at 1:8 instructor-to-student, with a 1:2 adult-to-student benchmark for Year 8 and below. Buddy system always; wetsuits mandatory where conditions call for them. All kaimahi are Children's Act safety checked, oxygen and first aid are on deck for every session, and our Safety Management System is externally audited and available on request. The full EOTC School Pack — provider agreement, RAMS and instructor qualifications — is sent on registration.
What your kura provides
A liaison teacher contactable 24 hours, behaviour and pastoral care of ākonga, health and behaviour profiles two weeks ahead, parent helpers to ratio, and transport to the pool.
Funding
Schools fund pool days through EOTC budgets, Gateway, STAR, Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa, Water Safety NZ, and creative or environmental grants. We can point you at the right one.
