Description

Classroom to pool to open moana — with a follow-up and a restoration project to close the circle.

Moana Immersion is a full progression: breathwork and marine ecology in the classroom, freedive safety skills in the pool, a guided ocean field trip in the Bay of Islands, then a follow-up session and an on-the-ground action project — all woven through our Te Wheke Hauora Moana framework, which connects wellbeing, whakapapa and the ocean. Run it as an EOTC week, or spread the sessions across several weeks — we design the rhythm with you.

Who it's for

Year 7 and up, minimum 25 ākonga (one full class; two classes of 25 work beautifully together). Built for kura that want depth, not just a day out.

What ākonga learn

  • Breathwork and self-regulation — tools they keep for life
  • Freediving and snorkel technique — built safely, step by step
  • Marine ecology — biodiversity and the food web full circle, from plankton to rays, sharks and marine mammals
  • Te Wheke Hauora Moana — hauora through connection with the moana
  • Restoration and kaitiakitanga — treasuring te taiao with a real action project

The programme shape

Session one is in your classroom: biodiversity, safety and breathwork. Next comes pool training — freedive safety skills in instructor-led groups. Then the highlight: a guided ocean field trip in a sheltered Bay of Islands bay, with options from the clear freshwater of Kai Iwi Lakes to the Cavalli Islands for capable senior groups. A follow-up class session ties the science and the experience together, and a restoration action project puts kaitiakitanga into practice. Every kura gets a written report after delivery.

Price

$105 per ākonga + GST (minimum 25 ākonga). Covers all planning and H&S paperwork, classroom and pool sessions, the field trip with trained support to safety ratios, follow-up and restoration sessions, gear and full sterilisation, and travel. Invoiced to the school — registering interest costs nothing and holds your term dates.

Safety & ratios

Pool sessions run at 1:8 instructor-to-student; open water at 1:4 in-water plus a dedicated lookout; Year 8 and below work to a 1:2 adult-to-student benchmark. Buddy system always, wetsuits mandatory, oxygen and first aid on every activity, all kaimahi Children's Act safety checked, and our externally audited Safety Management System is available on request. The full EOTC School Pack — provider agreement, RAMS and instructor qualifications — is sent on registration.

What your kura provides

A liaison teacher contactable 24 hours, behaviour and pastoral care of ākonga, health and behaviour profiles two weeks ahead, parent helpers to ratio, and transport each session.

Funding

EOTC budgets, Gateway, STAR, Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa, Water Safety NZ, and creative or environmental grants. A multi-session programme is a strong funding application — we'll help you frame it.
