Northland has three island groups that freedivers travel across the world for, and we dive all three. Here's what makes each one special, and how to get in the water there.
Poor Knights Islands
Jacques Cousteau named the Poor Knights one of the top ten dive sites in the world. It's a marine reserve off Tutukaka, with arches, caves, kelp and big schools of fish in clear blue water. It's best for certified freedivers who are comfortable in open water.
Cavalli Islands
Clear water, kelp forests and the wreck of the Rainbow Warrior. The Cavallis sit off Matauri Bay and feel wild and quiet, with fewer boats than the busier sites.
Bay of Islands
Sheltered bays and islands right on our doorstep in Paihia. This is where most of our courses run, because there's almost always somewhere calm to dive, whatever the wind is doing.
How to dive them with us
New to freediving? Start with our two-day Freedive Course: pool, then ocean, and you leave an SSI certified freediver.
Already certified? Join a Guided Freedive Adventure. We pick the site for the conditions and dive together.
