What to Expect on Your First Freediving Course

What to Expect on Your First Freediving Course

Your first freediving course is not a test of how long you can hold your breath. It’s an introduction to moving calmly and safely in the water, learning how your body responds, and building skills at your own pace.

Start with the foundations

Before getting in the water, your instructor will introduce the key principles of freediving, including relaxation, breath awareness, equalisation and safety. You’ll learn why good technique matters more than pushing your limits, and how to communicate clearly with your buddy.

Learn in a supportive environment

Expect guided practice, demonstrations and plenty of time to ask questions. You’ll work on breathing and relaxation, then practise water skills under instructor supervision. Everyone arrives with a different comfort level, so there’s no need to compare your progress with anyone else’s.

Safety comes first

Freediving is always practised with appropriate supervision and a trained buddy. Your instructor will explain the safety procedures for each exercise and help you understand when to rest. Never practise breath-holding alone, in or near water.

Bring curiosity, not pressure

You don’t need to arrive with a big breath-hold or ocean experience. Come ready to listen, learn and take each step at a pace that feels right for you. The goal is to leave with a stronger understanding of yourself in the water and a safe foundation for continuing your freediving journey.
