Club afternoons · every second Wednesday

Come for the water, stay for the people

Every second Wednesday this summer, our club heads out on the water from Paihia, 4pm to 8pm. About three hours on the boat with Paihia Dive, then back for a barbecue and a catch-up.

Each afternoon has one focus: a relaxed dive, a spearfishing workshop with BOI Spearo, a depth line session, ocean to table with our chef, or a social swim. There's a Freedive Aotearoa instructor every time, and about six freedivers on the boat.

Doesn't matter where you're at. Come for the water, stay for the people.

Our kaitiakitanga promise

Looking after each other, and this place

Kaitiakitanga (guardianship) is at the heart of everything we do. Being kaitiaki means looking after each other, looking after this place, and having a deep connection with the kai (food) we put in our bodies.

In Te Tai Tokerau (Northland), gathering and sharing kai isn't a trend. It's our way of life: a feed shared up the road, lemons off the tree, kai from friends and whānau. We want to help ensure that way of life for our tamariki (kids) and theirs.

So we take only what we need, leave the breeders, share what we gather, and give back to the places that feed us. Water safety is part of it too: coming home safely to the people we love.

Five kinds of afternoon

Each date has one focus, posted at least two weeks ahead. Every afternoon ends with the barbecue.

Drop-in dive Duck dives, breath-holds, buddy safety and exploring. For certified divers wanting water time.
Spearfishing workshop With BOI Spearo: gun safety, technique, fish ID, size limits, and only taking what you need.
Depth line session Buoy and line in deeper water, warm-ups, then buddy training dives. SSI Level 1 or equivalent.
Ocean to table Make tom yum with the whole fish, then share kai and chef the heck out of it.
Social afternoon A gentle swim or snorkel somewhere beautiful, then home early for the barbecue. Everyone welcome.
Our chef

Ocean to table

Our chef

Our chef teaches us how to make a delicious tom yum using the whole fish, so nothing goes to waste.

From the water to the table: how to process, keep and store your kai, use every part of it, share it, smoke it, cook it, make proper sauces, and chef the heck out of it.

More about our chef soon.

How we dive together

  • One up, one down, always.
  • Stay within arm's reach of your buddy, even when hunting.
  • Watch your buddy for about 20 seconds after they surface.
  • Never rush a breathe-up or dive out of turn.
  • Load guns in the water only, pointed away from people.
  • The instructor runs the line and makes the call on conditions.
  • Drinks only once diving is finished.
