For the ones stepping up

More than a dive

This day is for the people who want to take it further. Maybe you'd like to become a kaiako. Maybe you're already the one your mates follow into the water. You've done a Koha session, and now you're strengthening toward leading your own people.

We head out on the boat for a hunt with our spearfishing specialists alongside you. And hopefully you come home with a big feed of kai for the whānau.

A lot more safety than a usual dive

What to expect

A lot more safety than a usual dive

A full day on the boat with a small crew, just 4 to 5 places. Best practice for diving, hunting and gathering, so you can share it with your mates.

Buddy checks, spotting trouble early and knowing how to step in. You walk off the boat ready to lead, not just to dive.

  3. The hunt

  4. Through the day
When it gets a bit loose

Ready for when it doesn't go to plan

Keeping your cool

Ready for when it doesn't go to plan

Out in the wild, things can get a bit loose. We practise what to do, so you can stay calm, keep your crew together and step in early.

Then take it home: to your whānau, your mates, your club and your wider community. That's how leaders grow.

Dates and booking

One day a month, November to May

No Spearfishing & Kai Day in January. Choose your month and pay to hold your spot, then every person fills in the registration form. Haven't done a Koha session yet? Book one first, or sign up and we'll sort it, or refund you.

Huge thanks to the good buggers at Water Safety New Zealand for backing these days, and to you for stepping up.

Commonly asked questions
Do I need to have done a Koha session?

Yes. The Koha Freedive Session gives you the foundations, and this day builds on them. Book a Koha session.

Is my spot confirmed when I pay?

Not yet. Every person fills in the registration form. Once we have your payment and your form, we'll email your confirmation, the date and where to meet.

What if the weather's bad?

This isn't a theme park: we're out in the wild, so we can't promise the kai, the visibility or the weather. We check conditions 48 hours out and sometimes make the final call the night before. If we cancel, it's for your safety, and you choose a new date or a refund.

Can I get a refund?

Tell us 7 or more days before and you get a full refund. Inside 7 days we can't refund, because the boat and crew are booked, but you can move your date or transfer it to a mate. Unwell? Talk to us and we'll move you. Full policy.

What happens after?

Keep going on the kaiako pathway, join a club near you, and share what you've learned with your people. Find out about becoming a kaiako.
