What we stand for
Freedive Aotearoa is a small, family-run school built on a lifetime in the ocean. There’s no call centre and no factory line — you’ll be taught by the person who built this school, and the handful of people we trust beside us in the water. Everything we do is held in one simple balance: keep you safe, and teach you well.
Safety, always
Safety comes first — every time, without exception. Every session is coached, every dive is supervised, and we move at the pace of the ocean and the person in front of us. We’ve spent our lives learning how to keep people safe in a place where you cannot breathe, and we never hold that lightly.
Taught by the highest trained
When you learn with us, you learn from someone who has given their life to the water. Sacha is one of only two SSI Freediving Instructor Trainers in New Zealand — and the first woman to hold the qualification — with 25 years and 45 countries of professional ocean work behind her. This isn’t a side hustle. It’s a lifetime of hard-won experience, poured into you.
A small family
We’re small on purpose. It means we know your name, we remember where you’re up to, and we can meet you exactly where you are — whether that’s your very first breath-hold or your instructor exam. You’re not a booking number here. You’re part of the whānau.
Kaitiakitanga
We protect the water that gives us everything — diving ethically, treading lightly, and giving back to the moana and the communities around it. The ocean has looked after us for 25 years; we spend our days making sure it’s still here, and still wild, for the ones who come next.
Everyone belongs
All ages, all genders, all welcome. Wetsuit or mermaid tail, nervous first-timer or seasoned diver — the ocean doesn’t care what you’re wearing or where you’re starting from, and neither do we.

We’ll take a deck full of new friends over a lobby full of strangers any day. What we offer isn’t five-star gloss — it’s connection, presence, and the kind of day in the water you carry with you for the rest of your life.
25 years of ocean work
Teaching people to freedive is only half of what we do. For 25 years we’ve worked alongside the organisations protecting, studying and sharing Aotearoa’s oceans — and taken hundreds of rangatahi into the water through school and community programmes across Te Taitokerau.
